Chapter Twenty-Five

“I heard about the auction,” said Guy Skingle. “But I don’t think it’ll sell; the house is so far underwater, I doubt anyone will bid.”

I didn’t think much of Skingle when I’d met him at Vicky’s funeral and nothing during this visit had so far changed my mind. It’s not uncommon for Moabites to have a tan, but his was unnaturally orange. I didn’t know the brand, but it wasn’t cutting it. In fluorescent light, he reminded me of a jack-o-lantern. In black light, I bet he glowed like an open furnace.

He chewed Altoids like they were food, crushing them between his teeth in little pyrotechnic sparks until his breath was so minty it nauseated me. Between Altoid shots he drew his fingers through his hair to refresh his failing pompadour.

“I thought you said you had buyers?”

“I do, but they’re not stupid,” I could see chemical vapors on his breath. It cleared my sinuses. “They’ll wait for the bank to repo it and then make a deal with them. In this economy they’ll do much better that way. When the market rebounds, it’s a prime flipper, but now it’s not worth what’s owed on it.”

“What was your plan before?”

“Pick it up at a short sale,” he said.

I squinted.

“It’s done all the time,” he said. “You don’t own it. What do you care?”
